Mary & Martha is a soulful piece from the Sacred Sisterhood collection , embodying the sacred presence of grandmother and auntie energy. The mirrored figures, adorned in layered beadwork, yarn-wrapped hairstyles, and cowrie shells, reflect the spiritual significance of twinhood, both literal and symbolic.
Though youthful in appearance, the work holds a quiet wisdom. Inspired by the artist’s own lineage, including a great-grandmother with an identical twin, Mary & Martha channels ancestral frequencies that surfaced intuitively during its creation. The presence of “twin energy” appeared again and again, not just in art, but in the artist’s life and family.
Each stitch is intentional, representing the silent guidance of elders, the weight of lineage, and the dual energies that live within and around us.
Artist Note
Mary & Martha was never meant to be ancestral but the ancestors had other plans. What began as a creative flow became a dialogue with unseen hands: grandmother, auntie, twin. The piece felt like a presence; protective, watching, woven through my breath and thread. I realize now… this wasn’t just about two figures. It was about the spirit of the women who protect us and shape us quietly.
